Empatia Program
Research revealed widespread psychological distress among Ukrainians displaced by war, particularly reluctance to seek mental health support. This is why we created Empatia program dedicated to improving their mental health. What sets Empatia apart is its unique approach: connecting Ukrainian psychologists with Dutch healthcare institutions to improve mental health service delivery.
By building these connections, we not only support the well-being of displaced Ukrainians but also provide Dutch mental health organizations and municipalities with culturally sensitive guidance to ensure they offer appropriate care. So far we:
3500+
Processed helpline requests
from displaced Ukrainians
750+
Processed requests from Dutch mental health organisations and municipalities.
50
Matched Ukrainian mental health professionals with Dutch mental health organisations.

Our ongoing research
While much research has explored various aspects of return migration, there is still a significant gap in understanding the unique challenges and impacts of returning during an ongoing conflict.
Focusing on the psychological well-being of returnees is crucial for their long-term reintegration and the rebuilding of Ukraine’s society and economy. Timely intervention is needed to capture the real-time experiences of those returning, providing data that can inform effective policies and support initiatives.
Through this research, we aim to offer a nuanced understanding of the psychological well-being of displaced Ukrainians returning home amid the active phase of the war.
