🏡 In beginning of the 2022, Dutch municipalities demonstrated remarkable dedication in organizing reception facilities for displaced individuals from Ukraine, swiftly addressing the urgent need for housing. As we spoke to 25 municipalities, we learned that they initially received significant support from local businesses and landowners, whose willingness to help played a crucial role in responding rapidly to the urgent situation.
As the situation evolved, the need for long-term solutions became clear, highlighted by feedback from both displaced individuals and municipal representatives. Some municipalities have proactively begun funding projects to construct semi-long-term housing for displaced Ukrainians, often alongside housing for asylum-seekers and refugees. Ukrainians aspire to join the general housing market, and municipal support can benefit both sides—helping Ukrainians find homes and reducing municipal costs.
This proactive stance reflects a collective effort to address housing challenges effectively. The necessity for a long-term perspective is now evident, especially given the ongoing war. OPORA’s research delves into these long-term housing challenges and proposes evidence-based solutions.
